    Definition:

A current of air, moving with speed in any direction, but generally assumed to be parallel to the earth’s surface.

The direction of a wind is indicated by the point of the compass from which it blows. It is measured with either a wind vane or an anemometer

The speed of the wind is given in knots. It is measured with the use of a Dines anemograph (which also records direction)

Under varying conditions of pressure, air will move from a high pressure area (down flow) to a low pressure area (upward flow). The result is called wind and is directly proportional to the pressure gradient

    Laws Governing Winds
    §Buys Ballot’s Law

This states that if an observer stands in the Southern Hemisphere with their back to the wind, they will have a low pressure on their right. i.e. winds will move clockwise round centres of low pressure and anticlockwise around centres of high pressure

    §Ferrel’s Law

This states that a body moving in any direction over the earth’s surface will tend to be deflected, owing to the earth’s rotation. In the Southern Hemisphere this deflection will be to the left. i.e. a wind blowing S to N on a stationary earth would become a SE due to Ferrel’s Law

    Coriolis Force

    §An expression of Ferrel’s Law
§The apparent force required to deflect an air mass moving over the surface of a rotating body, (to the left in the Southern Hemisphere) without altering its speed
§The magnitude of deflection is directly proportional to the horizontal velocity of the air and to the sine of the latitude
§The effect is at a maximum at the poles, and minimum at the equator
§Coriolis force always acts at a right angles to the direction of the air motion and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere

    Pressure Gradient Force

§The net force exerted on an air parcel arising from its location in a pressure gradient
§The pressure gradient force starts a mass of air moving
§The steeper the pressure gradient the greater the pressure gradient force resulting in a stronger wind blowing

    Geostrophic Wind

§A horizontal wind produced by the balance of the Coriolis Force and the horizontal Pressure Gradient Force
§A true geostrophic wind is hypothetical but a wind that approximates the balance is said to be geostrophic
§A true geostrophic wind blows perfectly parallel to isobars
§Near the earth’s surface friction reduces the geostrophic force and wind will blow across the isobars resulting in ageostrophic flow
§An importance of a geostrophic wind is that there will be no resultant convergence or divergence and thus no weather will be produced

    Gradient Wind

§A horizontal wind produced by the balance of Coriolis, centrifugal and horizontal pressure gradient forces with cyclonic or anticyclonic curvature of flow
§The existence of high and low pressure cells means that isobars are generally curved rather than straight
§Nevertheless the wind direction still approximately flows parallel to the isobars, indicating the presence of a third force to maintain the balance
§This force is the centrifugal force produced by the rotation about the centre of the cell, also known as cyclostrophic flow
§The three-way balance between the Coriolis, the Pressure Gradient Force and the Centrifugal Force results in the Gradient Wind

    Surface Frictional Forces

§At the earth’s surface friction reduces the speed of the wind
§This results in a reduced Coriolis force which does not balance the pressure gradient force
§Consequently this imbalance causes the wind to cut the isobars at an angle
§The wind thus blows into a low and out of a high below 2000 ft
§The reduction in the Coriolis effect due to diminished wind speed at the surface will cause a wind to either “veer” or “back”
§The wind in the Southern Hemisphere therefore is said to “veer” whilst in the Northern Hemisphere it tends to “back”
§If a wind veers it moves clockwise (or forward) to its upper wind component position, but if a wind backs it moves anticlockwise (or backwards) to its upper wind component direction
§The nature of the surface will determine the amount of friction which in turn will influence the speed of the wind, the rougher the surface the greater the friction and the slower the wind

La suite plus tard . bonne lecture
